Towards more sustainable laboratories

Lessons from a student project

Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences × Isogen Life Science

How can laboratories reduce their environmental impact while maintaining reliable results? In collaboration with Isogen Life Science, Biomedical Laboratory Sciences students at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences explored practical improvements, from pipette tips and chemical alternatives to energy use and purchasing decisions.

Comparable performance, different opportunities

The students compared our Starlab and another brand's pipette tips, assessing usability, precision, and sustainability-related criteria. Both brands showed comparable usability and precision in routine applications.

The main sustainability opportunity identified for Starlab was its refill concept. Reusing tip boxes instead of replacing them can help reduce plastic packaging and laboratory waste.

For laboratories that do not yet reuse or refill tip boxes, adopting a refill system may offer greater scope to reduce waste. Are you interested in this? Let's get in touch!

Improving sustainability starts with understanding what your laboratory already does well and where changes can deliver meaningful benefits. This project demonstrates the value of combining practical testing with evidence-based purchasing decisions. At Isogen Life Science, we welcome collaborations that help laboratories make informed choices for their daily work.
